#3 Wild Card Series Bas Armagnac 1990 Domaine de Mestépès
Bas-Armagnac from Domaine de Mestépès, Distilled in 1990, 100% Baco, Gascogne French Oak Cask, 58,4% ABV, only 250 bottles, 200ml
« A walk between Islay, salty breezes and peat smoke, towards the Gascon forest where the pine forests whisper secrets, pipe in hand. »
Colour : Chestnut
Nose : Fruits and pastries tug at each other. On the one hand, nectarine, guava and a hint of lychee; on the other, lemon meringue pie, freshly melted caramel and a generous black forest. The referee? A touch of wood glue and a dash of pine sap. A real battle, slightly funky, and putting on a show.
Palate : Explosive! Tropical fruits take over, papaya, mango, pomegranate, before giving way to a warm croissant, soft caramel, a hint of liquorice and a background of cocoa beans. It's rich, delicious and lively!
Finish : Quite fresh, with a hint of menthol. Fruits in syrup return gently, accompanied by a melting brioche to finish on a sweet note.
Conclusion : A playful profile, balancing tropical fruit, a generous dessert and a few woody notes. There's a lot going on, but it works perfectly, a real pleasure.
#4 Wild Card Series Armagnac Ténarèze 2001 Domaine de Séailles
Armagnac Ténarèze from Domaine de Séailles, Distilled in 2001, Gascogne French Oak Cask, 51,8% ABV, only 250 bottles, 200ml
« Gascon elegance in silky clothes, but beneath the woody lace, a fever of Trinidad escapes, warm, obscure, unpredictable. »
Colour : Deep chestnut
Nez : Cooked fruit, yellow and red fruit, a juicy mix - blackcurrant, ripe peach, with a hint of menthol and a warm golden crescent. In the background, a darker dimension emerges: freshly waxed leather, ballooning, toasted oak... and even an unexpected hint of char-grilled beef, with caramelised onions in vinegar. A dense, complex nose. Truly intriguing!
Palate : Brighter and fresher than the nose. Fresh apricots, crisp strawberries, tangy fruits, and a little floral touch to brighten things up. In the background, discreet leather, mellow oak and a hint of liquorice.
Finish : Black fruit, with juicy blackberries and liquorice, crushed in the bottom of an animal leather saddlebag. Long and full of character.
Conclusion : A dense, contrasting profile, which plays well with bright fruit, minty freshness and a darker dimension. Quite a personality, just what you'd expect from a Ténarèze Armagnac!
