#5 Wild Card Series Jamaïcain Monymusk 2010
Jamaican Rum from Monymusk, distilled in 2010, Aged 8 tropical years and 7 continental years, Cask Strength, 66,4%, 200ml
Colour : Yellow gold
Nose : Surprising and captivating right from the start. It opens with a medicinal touch, light glue, varnish, eucalyptus, and camphor. But then, it shifts. The profile evolves rapidly: green banana, apricot, papaya, and a hint of candied lemon emerge. A pastry-like roundness follows, think fruit-studded brioche and slivered almonds with a soft touch of vanilla. This is a nose that won’t sit still, constantly evolving, layered, and full of unexpected turns. You can’t pin it down, and that’s what makes it so engaging.
Palate : Dry and focused on the attack, with a beautifully controlled intensity. Exotic fruits, mango, apricot, warm spices black pepper, cinnamon, and elegant oak lead the way. Underneath, notes of toasted almonds, blond tobacco, and a hint of dark chocolate bring depth. The alcohol is perfectly integrated, powerful but never overpowering. Like the nose, the palate keeps unfolding, revealing more with each sip.
Finish : Long, warm, oak, vanilla, and roasted cacao come through, followed by a lingering mentholated freshness. The complexity doesn’t fade, it lingers and evolves, even after the last drop.
Conclusion : A Monymusk that defies expectations. Refined yet funky, wild yet precise. This isn’t just a rum for ester-heads, it’s a sophisticated, shape-shifting spirit that keeps surprising you from nose to finish. A stunning selection from Swell de Spirits, and a real standout for lovers of complexity and evolution in their dram.
#6 Wild Card Series Cognac Pasquet L79 Petite Champagne
Cognac Pasquet L79, Cru Petite Champagne, Cask Strength, 49,1%, 200ml
Colour : Rich Mahogany
Nose : A rich and inviting opening, a cascade of stewed orchard fruits : plums, nectarines, apricots bathed in acacia honey, and ripe greengages. Orange peel adds brightness, while gentle notes of dark berries and lychee give it a juicy depth. Beneath the fruit, layers unfold a whisper of tobacco leaf, floral pollen, a touch of mineral varnish, and a herbal syrup note that widens the aromatic spectrum. Spearmint and cut grass bring lift and freshness. As it breathes, violets, honeyed tea, and even a hint of rancio begin to appear. A nose in motion elegant, layered, and endlessly evolving.
Palate : Elegant and expressive from the first sip. Juicy fruit takes center stage, pear tarte tatin, stewed peaches, apricot compote wrapped in subtle notes of dessert wine and heather honey. There’s a slightly leafy, earthy grip, walnut skin, herbal liqueur, but it never dries out. Instead, it adds dimension. Eucalyptus, faint lamp oil, and gentle tannins hint at age and depth. Everything here is in perfect order, fruit, herbs, spices, and rancio flowing in harmony.
Finale : Long and serene. Notes of fruit tea, vine peaches, and honey linger with a resinous, slightly darker fruitiness. A final breath of menthol and floral sweetness rounds it out beautifully.
Conclusion : A truly outstanding old cognac, refined, vibrant, and full of quiet complexity. It evolves constantly, revealing new facets with time and air. More than just a fruit bomb, this is about balance, grace, and perfect arrangement. A spirit that speaks softly but leaves a lasting impression. A classic and perhaps even a little timeless.
