Trinidad rum, distilled at Caroni in 1998, HTR mark, cask strength, 55.3%, 200ml

Colour: Dark mahogany

Nose: There is no doubt as to its origin; the Caroni signature is unmistakable. Freshly laid asphalt and melted rubber dominate, dense, almost scorching, accompanied by an industrial note. Then the profile gradually opens up, revealing roasted fruits: caramelised mango, candied papaya, and a juicy, slightly toasted peach. A hint of liquorice and menthol cuts through the whole, bringing a pleasant freshness that balances this darkness. The longer the glass breathes, the more fascinating the contrast becomes between tarry heat and fruity brightness.

Palate: Full-bodied and powerful from the first sip. The dark side immediately takes the upper hand: hydrocarbons, hot rubber. Very quickly, the fresh and roasted fruits return with a vengeance – mango, papaya, peach – some even emerging as compote, bringing a lovely richness. The mentholated freshness settles in gradually. The balance between raw intensity and fruity roundness is remarkable.

Finish: Notes of tar and rubber linger, accompanied by roasted fruit. The menthol returns on the finish, leaving a fresh and slightly airy sensation that prolongs the tasting experience.

Conclusion: A Caroni HTR that pulls no punches with its very distinctive notes, where the power of the industrial notes meets a lovely fruity richness.
